The last snow - part 7

“Sometimes fate takes away the things which you need the most.”

Beep...Beep...Beep. The heart rate monitor made the continuous sound. Rohan's Dad was waiting for Rohan to become conscious. He was sitting on the armchair near to where Rohan lied. Seeing his only son in such condition was indeed not what he ever dreamt of. Rohan got a fracture in the left hand and major cuts and bruises on his legs. He got 10 stitches on the left side of his forehead just above his left eye because of glass pieces. It caused heavy loss of blood and due to which he fell unconscious immediately. Thankfully, it saved his eye.

Rohan: Da... Da..D?
(Somehow Rohan's lips escaped those words.)

Dad: Son! No. Don't stretch your eyes. You got stitches.
(He immediately came near the hospital bed.)

Rohan: Dad!
(A tear escapes his eyes and he continues.)
Dad... Whe..re..is Di..ya?

Dad: She is okay son. Please calm down. I need to call the doctor first to check on you. Please don't move.

Rohan laid there closing his eyes. Rewinding the last few hours of his life.

Diya replied “I love you. I am so happy. We are parentically, sociatically, mentally committed.” “My God! Horrendous creation of your words. Is it some new dictionary?” Rohan was smiling now. “Yes, it is my love dictionary!” They laughed together and stopped over a signal which shown red light. “So when I can taste your lips?” Rohan asked in an intense look. “Before I say you goodbye for this night” Diya blushed. “Ooh, I am excited!”

Bang!

"Diya!!" Rohan shouted, seeing her getting banged to the dashboard hard. And he saw the blood running all over her face and dress. Before he can hold her he turned dizzy and black out.

The memory flashback made him open his eyes too wide and scream harder. Doctor and his Dad came rushing inside his room. The doctor checked his pulse and gave him a sedative seeing him panicking. And left the room. He became calm in a few seconds, but dizziness didn't spare him.

"Dad. I want to see Diya. Where is she? Why are you not telling me?" Rohan blurted out to his Dad. "Son, calm down and listen to me carefully." He wanted Rohan to relax and hear him out. Rohan's expressions were changed. He was more worried now. "She is unconscious now. Her parents are with her. You calm down." Rohan's Dad managed to calm him down, but all in vain. "Dad! What are you hiding tell me!! Please!" He screamed. Rohan's Dad could not control his tears and managed to say, "Diya is in ICU. She slipped into coma." Rohan could not believe his ears. He started sobbing, "Dad. Take me to her, please. I want to see her."

"Rohan... You need to rest. I will take you to her. Please, for now, listen to me." Rohan's Dad was holding on his feelings. He knew how it feels losing someone who means to you. "Dad... I can't wait, please." Rohan was sobbing badly and he started to get off his bed. Rohan's Dad got a hold of Rohan's arm, "Rohan! No! You are injured badly. Wait, please! I will ask a nurse to bring a wheelchair. Please." Rohan without saying anything waited in patience.

Rohan's Dad came back with a nurse. She brought the wheelchair near to Rohan's bed. She plugged out the heart rate monitor. N took the saline drip in her hands and asked Rohan's Dad to help her. They helped Rohan to sit in the wheelchair. She gave the saline bottle to Rohan's Dad to hold it. And she left the room.

Rohan was in pain. Not physically - Mentally - Emotionally. Rohan's Dad pushed the wheelchair with his hands tucking the saline bottle on the handle. And they left the room. Rohan was anxious. Rohan's Dad brought the wheelchair to hold in front of a glass window. No words exchanged, and both of them looked through the glass pane.

Tears flowed through Rohan's eyes without interruption. Seeing Diya wrapped in bandages and too many machines. She had an oxygen mask put on too. She was lying unconscious. He was sitting helpless. Everything became a stand still for Rohan. He cannot see her leaving him. He cannot lose another loved person of his life. He was angry, furious, hurt. Only tears are what he owns he thought to himself.

Rohan's Dad didn't utter a word. He knew how Rohan was feeling. He had his own flashback on his mind. Seeing Rohan's Mom in the same condition was not an easy task that time. And today his son is standing on the same emotional stage. He too was short of words. He even let his tears release from the bondage.

Rohan's Dad was interrupted from his thoughts, by a pat on his shoulder. He turned around to find two policemen. One of the policemen said,"Hello Sir. I am Mr. Dixit. Mr. Ram Prakash sent me here. He is very sorry that he could not make it here. He is in Delhi for a conference. You need not worry, I will handle the case."

Rohan's Dad: Hello. It's okay. I need the driver to be arrested. That's it.

Mr. Dixit: Yes Sir. With help of CCTV footage of the lamp post. It's crystal clear that it was the driver's fault. Moreover, he was drunk and driving. So he will have to pay fine and get sentenced. We have already canceled his license. We are waiting for him to get discharged as he is injured too.

Rohan sat numb all the time hearing the conversation.

Rohan's Dad was angry hearing the real picture of the accident.

Rohan's Dad: Whatever is the formalities Inspector, I just need him to get punished for doing this to my children.

Rohan: Dad. Don't let him go to jail or fined. It's my fault.

He was still looking through the glass pane and uttering.

Rohan's Dad: No son. It's not. He was drunk and driving.

Rohan: But Dad, will Diya become alright?

Rohan's Dad was in a dilemma. He knew it was too much to take in. He gestured to the police officer that he will contact him soon. Seeing the seriousness of the moment, the police officers left, givng a salute to Rohan's Dad.

Rohan's Dad: Let's go back to your room.

Rohan: Dad, I want to meet Diya's parents.

Rohan's Dad: Okay.

He didn't wanted to add stress to his child anymore. But he had no other options. So he moved Rohan's wheelchair to near the ICU door. Diya's parents were sitting over there as there world was coming to crash down. Diya's Mom was weeping silently, whereas his Dad was staring at the empty floor. Rohan's Dad and Rohan reached there and Rohan said, “I am sorry Aunty and Uncle, it's my fault.” Rohan's Dad responded it and went near Rohan's wheelchair and kneeled down to talk with him. “Rohan, it's not your fault. Please don't blame yourself. We all have to stay strong and pray for Diya. She will be fine. I know.” And after saying this he brushed Rohan's hair and got up. Rohan could not say another word.
Diya's Mom sat their silently all the time without saying any word. She just wept. Rohan sat silently losing tears and hopes. Rohan's Dad and Diya's Dad stood a bit away from them and were having a chat  about their children's health condition and about the police case.

The tension was obvious. Few hours back every one of them were happy and smiling. Suddenly fate brings them to the hospital. Rohan who thought a perfect life was waiting for him, played a joke on him. He lost his Mother. Now her love. He didn't deserve it. Rohan's Dad who loved his son so much, who just made a strong bond with him after such a long time has to see his son losing all hopes and happiness. He was upset from God. First for taking away his wife, and now for making his son's life so miserable. The world stopped for Diya's parents. The fear of losing the only child - their life - their happiness - their hopes. Everything now came to hold.

Meanwhile
A nurse came out hurriedly outside the ICU and went to the Doctor's room. “Sir, patient Diya, her heartbeats is deteriorating. Please come and check.”
